In 1998, the Sao Paulo Biennial decided to modify part of the national representations segment. Paulo Herkenhoff was the first curator of this event to set foot in Central America and the Caribbean: by getting to know the artists and the good works produced in the region, he had expressed his preoccupation for their little presence in past biennials. Thus, he asked Virginia Pérez-Ratton to be the Regional Curator of the event and, consequently, the conceptual articulator of the national representations of Central America and the Caribbean.
