In its 2025 edition, the Costa Rica Festival Internacional de Cine (CRFIC) opens a new space dedicated to video art, with the aim of fully integrating it into the panorama of contemporary audiovisual production. This initiative is born with the intention of making visible an artistic practice that challenges the traditional limits of cinema, expanding its narrative, aesthetic and political possibilities.
Participating in the development of this video art cycle are: Abraespacio, Alianza Francesa, cerouno, deCERCA, Escuela Artes Plásticas – UCR, MADC, Reunion, satis.FACTORY Casa de Artes and TEOR/éTica.
In TEOR/éTica we present a selection of video art works from the 1990s and early 2000s that make up the MADC Video Art Collection and the Archive of Lado V – Center for Study and Documentation. This compilation intends to show, in a non-exhaustive way, a part of the history of video art in Costa Rica through representative works that show the ways of seeing and narrating with moving images different realities of our context through the available technologies or “new media” of that time.
In addition to the video screenings, the exhibition includes a selection of archival materials—such as photographs, documents, catalogs, and other records—that offer the public an opportunity to engage with the context in which the works were produced, circulated, and received, thereby enriching their understanding of the pieces.
Throughout the process, the exhibition evolved, particularly through the incorporation of archival materials. This allowed us to recognize its potential to transcend the original context of CRFIC.
For this reason, we’ve decided to keep it open until August 1st, in order to continue sharing it and to create space for new interpretations and perspectives.
