In an era of over-populated virtual iconography and in which the veracity of poor images is no longer questioned, how do we hold our gaze and resist banalizing the images that represent violence? Could art be the last place from which to do so?
The subject of violence is a complex matter to address, especially from Central America where armed conflicts both of the past and in the present are constant and a continuing phenomenon. This exhibition explores different occurrences of violence through works that turn the spectator into a witness. It brings together works that individually create their own ethics of representation towards crime, ideological terrorism, torture, massacres, disappearances of people and abuse of authority. Each artist proposes an aesthetic realm investigating the politics of images depicting violence. By generating a wider scope of types of images, which provide an alternative to those circulating in the media, the works on display attempt to dislocate the perspective of the viewer and call attention to latent complexities within the representations of violence and therefore, encounter the subjectivities of those who take part of it.
The exhibition also includes works from the Collection Virginia Pérez-Ratton, regularly located in TEOR/éTica’s Lado V. The selected pieces address subjects of violence, ranging from works informed by context and historical specificity to more analytical interests on the form and image production of a violent gesture.
